Help about RoughSex.org web pages

These pages are designed to help you find out more about the service available here, and how to use it. If you still have problems, contact the webmaster and ask for help.

1. What is my web address?

When you join the site, you will pick a name, and that name will be part of your web address. It could be a nickname, or your real name - for example, names on the site include nigel and irl_skin. Your web address is the name of the site, followed by the name, for example www.roughsex.org/irl_skin.

The server is set up so that you can abbreviate addresses, missing off the www. For example, you can tell people to visit your site via http://roughsex.org/nigel

2. How do I upload pages?

You use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload pages to the web server. Many web design packages, such as DreamWeaver, or PageMill, have a built in FTP system for transferring your pages, or you can use a specialised FTP program like ws_ftp for Windows or Fetch for Macintosh.

You should connect to the server www.roughsex.org with the login name and password that you were given when your account was set up. The login name is not necessarily the same as the site name; for example you might have a site name of fred and a login name rs-fred which you should use whenever the server asks you to log in.

The server will automatically place you in the correct directory for uploading your files. You should call the main page of your site index.html.

If there is a file called hideme in your web directory, then your name will not appear in the members' index.

3. How do I get a description in the members' index?

Your site name will automatically appear in the members' index, which can be reached via the server's main home page. If you would like a short description to appear below your name, you should place a file called info.txt in the main directory of your web site. The contents of the file will be included on the index page.

If you would like your page not to appear in the index, create a file called hideme in your web directory. If you remove this file, your site will appear in the index again.

4. Why can't I connect to the web server?

The server includes security that restricts FTP access to a list of allowed hosts. This means that if you attempt to upload your site from somewhere that is not authorised, you will not be able to connect. Depending on the program you are using to upload pages, you may receive a range of different errors. If you are able to turn on logging, you should see a message similar to this one:

220-You are connecting from fags.diversity.org.uk
220-Your user information is reported as nigel
220-
220-nigel@fags.diversity.org.uk, unauthorised access to this system may constitute
220-a breach of the Computer Misuse Act.
220-
220-Access information has been recorded and will be reported
220-to the relevant authorities if necessary.
220-
220-Disconnect now if you do not have explicit permission
220-to access this system.

You should contact the webmaster and inform him of the information in 'user information' and 'connecting from' lines, so that the security software can be updated to allow you access to the server. If you are unable to view the information, the name of the ISP you are using and the approximate time of your attempt to upload the pages will enable the access controls to be adjusted.

5. Are there counters and other scripts available?

The server supports PHP4 scripting. If you would like to implement access control - where the server requests a password for access to some sections of your site - please ask the webmaster for more information.

6. Are FrontPage extensions available?

No. And they won't be made available. Use a proper web design tool.

7. Can I use the logo on my pages?

Certainly. You can find the logo that's at the top of this page at the address http://roughsex.org/RoughSex.jpg.
